The Evolution of Waffles

Obleios

The first type of waffle was from Ancient Greece. It was an obleios. It was a thin crunchy circular wafer usually served savory. It was often filled with herbs and cheeses. The obleios was similar to a modern day crepe.

I cooked a Crepe on a skillet and added herbs and cheese in the middle to make a dish similar to an obleios.

Medieval

In the Middle Ages a new type of waffle was made. It was batter cooked in double sided iron presses. The taste was improved with varying spices and honeys.

Later

Later in the 15th century they started using leavening agents to make the waffle rise and the iconic grid pattern was added from being cooked in a grid shaped presses.

America

Waffles started being sold in America in the 1600s from stands, but it is believed they came from a Dutch origin.

Commercial Waffles

In the 1950s the Dorsa Brothers introduced Eggo Waffles and those waffles quickly inspired the waffles we have today!

I bought Eggo strawberry waffles and then added butter for looks and taste! This is an example of a modern waffle.

Pros and Cons

Pros of modern waffle: easy to make, tasty, quick and a lot of variety.

Pros of ancient waffle: Cheesy, the herbs add flavor and crunchy.

Cons of modern waffle: artificial, unnatural food dye.

Cons of ancient waffle: The sweet crepe and salty cheese didnt go together well.

Overall

Overall I like the ancient waffle better because the texture was better and it tasted natural!
